About Galway, Ireland
Located on the west coast of Ireland, Galway City has its origins as a small fishing village centred on the estuary of the River Corrib, a river traditionally called Abhainn na Gaillimhe (The Galway River) after Galvia, a mythological princess said to have drowned in its waters. With humble beginnings as a fishing village, Galway has developed into Irelands 3rd largest city with a population of approximately 72,000. Galway is unique within the country due to its links to Irelands heritage. This is displayed in the city's love of the arts, music and particularly the language. With a Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking region) on its doorstep.
Galway City is home to one of Ireland's largest universities. It is also home to a number of medical device companies, both start-ups and multinationals.
Galway is a county and city that offers a visitor the heart pounding activity of the Galway Races, simply enjoying a pint by the fire at a local pub while listening to music.
