SYIS Activities
Student and Young Investigator Section (SYIS)
TERMIS-SYIS provides a platform for the "next generation" of scientists and engineers in the field of tissue engineering
and regenerative medicine to interact. SYIS aims to further the professional and scientific development of its members.
This year there are a number of activities planned to enhance the TERMIS-EU experience of its members.
Scientific Co-chair Program
Being a SYIS scientific co-chair offers SYIS members the opportunity to assist chairing a session with a leader in the field
of research during a scientific session. Applications for scientific co-chair have been received and sessions have been
allocated.
SYIS Welcome
Monday, 14th June
To find SYIS organisers, look out for the TERMIS-Galway t-shirts at the opening day reception. You can't miss us!
SYIS - EU General Meeting & SYIS Irish Experience
Monday, 14th June, 9.00pm - 11.30pm
The SYIS-EU General meeting will take place prior to the SYIS social event. Both events take place in The Kings Head
(www.thekingshead.ie) one of the oldest buildings in Galway. The General Meeting
aims to capture the views, ideas and suggestions of SYIS members and also to communicate current news about SYIS developments. Free snacks
and beverages will be provided during this session to warm up for the social event to take place immediately afterwards!
This year the SYIS social activity is centred on an 'SYIS Irish Experience'. This includes everything from Irish dancing, Irish music, Gaeilge
(the Irish Language), Guinness and having the craic (fun). Your experience in Ireland couldn't get more Irish than this! Prepare to pour your own
pint of Guinness and then learn to play the bodhrán or Irish tin whistle. If you're not too busy you might also get a chance to learn some Irish
dancing. You will also get a chance to practice a few words as Gaeilge. This activity will take place in a traditional teach tábhairne (pub!) in
Galway and promises to be a great event capturing a true Irish experience for all guests.
SYIS Careers Session & Student Mentor Meet
Tuesday, June 15 16.30 - 19.00

These events take place outside of the conference hotel in one of Galway's hidden gems, Brigit's Garden
(www.brigitsgarden.ie).
Transportation is arranged for these events. Catch the bus outside the hotel, Make sure you have signed up for this at the registration
desk. Details of the bus schedule will be available at the registration desk.
Based on the Celtic seasonal festivals, Brigit's Garden is widely regarded as one of the most spectacular
gardens in Ireland, set within
11 acres of native woodland & wildflower meadows. Its features include a
nature trail,
ogham trees, an ancient
ring fort (fairy fort),
Roundhouse and a
calendar sundial, the largest in Ireland.
The careers session this year is themed 'Engineering a Career in Tissue Engineering'. A panel of experts, each having
taken different but sometimes overlapping directions in their careers, will discuss, debate and offer insight into topics of interest
in the field today and provide insights into starting a career in this field. This session will be moderated by an SYIS member and
Professor Robert Nerem. Speakers include an editor of a top journal in the field, an up-and-coming PI, a clinician actively established
in research and a researcher in an industrial environment.
During the student-mentor meet, students and young investigators will get a chance to interact with world-renowned academic
and industrial investigators in the field of Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine. This will be an opportunity for students and
young investigators to have their questions answered by established research leaders in a relaxed and open discussion. The event will take
place over a complimentary wine and snacks reception. In addition, the scenic grounds of Brigit's Garden will be available for tours. Following
the end of this session, transport will be provided back to the conference hotel.
