Workshops
Two interesting workshops will be held during the next TERMIS-EU meeting.
The first one will take place on June 8th and is focused on the practical
and hands-on generation of alginate hydrogels for use in tissue
engineering. The second workshop is scheduled for June 10th and will deal
with GMP rules and practices in tissue engineering, including regulations
and policies. Both simposia are completely free for all TERMIS attendants.
If you are interested in attending a workshop, please e-mail us your name
and the workshop that you want to attend to. Simply send a message to
termis2011@gmail.com with the following
subject: (MY NAME) will attend the workshop on alginate or/and GMP
Don't miss the opportunity to participate in one or in both workshops!!!

TERMIS EU 2011 ANNUAL MEETING
GRANADA, 8th JUNE 2011
CELLS, GELS AND ALGINATE - AND A LITTLE MORE - AN ALGINATE TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP
Alginate is a unique biopolymer that can be used to immobilize, entrap or encapsulate living cells
by the instantaneous formation of an ionic cross-linked gel at physiological pH and temperature when
an alginate solution comes into contact with calcium ions. This technology has been used in the
creation of cell therapy constructs such as encapsulated pancreatic islets. The alginate bead or
capsule represents a biocompatible barrier between the immobilized cells and the body's immune system.
While the alginate bead system may be useful in several cell therapy situations, there is a need for
larger constructs or shaping of injectable alginate gel structures. A second construct makes use of an
injectable alginate solution that gels in situ. This "all-alginate" system of delayed gelling enables
the formulation to be injected or implanted into tissue and irregular cavities before gelling. Thirdly,
flexible alginate-based foams with adjustable structural integrity and biodegradation profiles have been
developed as a matrix for culturing cells in 3D. The ability to commercialize any gelling technology
within the pharmaceutical arena will depend upon regulatory acceptance. The ASTM Guidelines for alginate
used in tissue engineered medical products as well as the ASTM encapsulation guideline will also be
highlighted as well as other regulatory guidance. The workshop will also include three "hands-on"
stations where participants can make gels and immobilize materials in alginate matrices.
Suggested presentations:
Introduction to FMC BioPolymer/NovaMatrix (FMC presenter)
Alginate - a marine polymer with biomedical uses (FMC presenter)
Gelation - how alginate can be cross-linked to form gels (Invited presenter)
Cell encapsulation and applications (Invited presenter)
Self-gelling alginate and applications (FMC and invited presenters)
Alginate foam and 3D cell culture (FMC and invited presenters)
Regulatory considerations - FDA, USA, Ph.Eur., ASTM status for alginate (FMC presenter)
Review of alginate technology (FMC presenter)
Suggested hands-on workshop (three separate stations with participant rotation between stations):
- Gelation - making macrobeads and microcapsules (demonstration of calcium cross-linking of alginate)
- Self-gelling alginate - demonstration of an all-alginate delayed gelling syste
- Alginate matrix for 3D cell culture - demonstration of a new alginate-based matrix for 3D cell cultur
