ABSTRACT SUBMITTALS
Abstracts are invited for consideration for the Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine International Society - North America (TERMIS NA) 2008 conference, December 7 - 10, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla, California.
The abstract system is now CLOSED!
The TERMIS NA 2008 Conference will feature an outstanding scientific and business program and an industry-focused trade show bringing together national and international communities of scientists, clinicians, students, business leaders, entrepreneurs, and representatives of government funding agencies engaged or interested in the fields cellular therapies, medical devices and artificial organs, biomaterials, bioengineering and clinical translation. This year in particular will have a special focus on stem cells, organ tissue engineering and immunology, as reflected in plenary and additional sessions in each of these areas.
The goals: Present and exchange new results and advances in tissue engineering, discuss their context and enhance interactions, resulting in the advancement of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, ultimately benefiting patients worldwide.
This collaboration will enable a dynamic event, tapping cross-organization talent, and offering the presenters an opportunity to discuss their research and clinical successes with a broad audience. The TERMIS NA 2008 scientific program will focus on tissue engineering/regenerative medicine approaches to restoring the function of damaged or diseased tissues and organs leading to clinical applications and commercial advances. Concurrently, the program will feature platform/enabling technologies and many of the broader cross-cutting challenges facing this emerging field of biomedicine.
Experts from academia and commerce are invited to present timely information ranging from cutting edge research to successful implementation of tissue engineering technologies in all areas of tissue engineering/regenerative medicine including:
- Synthetic and Biologic Scaffolds
- Printing and Stereolithography for 3D Scaffolds
- Hydrogels
- Smart Biomaterials
- Stem Cells (MSCs, adult stem cells, embryonic stem cells)

- Soft Tissue Repair
- Craniofacial and Dental Tissue Engineering
- Musculoskeletal Tissue Engineering
- Cardiovascular and Vascular Tissue Engineering
- Neural Tissue Engineering
- Organ Tissue Engineering
- Cancer: In Vitro Models, Stem Cells
- Endocrine and Metabolic Tissue Engineering
- Immunology of Allografts and Xenografts
- Nanotechnology for Tissue Engineering
- Product Development, Scale-Up, Preservation and Shelf-life
- Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine in the Clinic
Review Criteria and Selection of Abstracts
The most innovative and promising basic, applied and clinical research within these topical areas will be presented
in 15-minute oral or poster presentations within specific tracks. Abstracts based on new research that has not been
presented or published elsewhere will be given primary consideration.
Abstracts will be reviewed by the Scientific Advisory Committee and Session chairs and evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Contribution and relevance to the field of tissue engineering/regenerative medicine and the literature
- Quality of scientific content
- Originality of research
- Previous presentation or publication
- Adherence to required format
Note:
- Some research is more appropriately presented in poster format. Preference for oral presentations will be given to those abstracts that are likely to stimulate broad scientific discussion.
- Abstracts that are not supported by full technical disclosure or are promotional rather than scientific in nature are discouraged.
- The final selection of abstracts and determinations of oral/poster format will be made by the Scientific Advisory Committee and Session Chairs and is not subject to appeal.
- Abstracts will be submitted for inclusion in conference proceedings (CD, memory stick, printed proceedings and/or online materials).
- Common reasons for abstract rejection are:
- Poorly supported research hypothesis/objective/rationale
- Experimental plan vague and/or not well documented/described
- Insufficient data collected
- Poor analysis of the data
- Conclusions not supported by the results
- Poor grammar/figures/tables
Abstract Content
The abstract should clearly describe the nature of the research and the problem it addresses, and be presented in
such language as to be understood by scientists representing the multi-disciplinary nature of tissue engineering.
The abstract should summarize the objectives of the research, the methodology employed, results, and their significance.
Content should be organized as follows:
- Introduction, including hypothesis and objectives
- Materials and Methods
- Results, in appropriate detail
- Discussion and Conclusions
- References, to key literature
Abstract Preparation
Authors must submit their abstract electronically by clicking here.
This is the ONLY option for abstract submission. A sample abstract is available at this link: Sample Abstract
Oral or Poster Preference
The preferred method of presentation (oral or poster) should be noted on the online submission form.
Your preference will be noted by the reviewers. Final determination will be made by the Scientific
Advisory Committee.
Abstract Format
General Issues: Each published abstract is required to fit on ONE 8.5" x 11" page and to be transmitted in either Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat (either *.doc or *.pdf) file type. The abstract should be formatted in two columns (3.25" columns, 0.75" inch margins all around, 0.5" between columns), inclusive of tables, graphs, or pictures, with all text in Times New Roman 10 point type with single line spacing.
File size should not exceed 3 MB.
Title: Title should be brief, clearly indicating the nature of the presentation. Title should be in bold font and mixed case font followed by a single return. Do not put a period at the end of the title.
Example for Title: This is a Properly Formatted Abstract Title
Author(s): In upper and lower case letters as follows: First Name, Middle Initial Last Name of each author (underline the name of the presenting author) with the corresponding institution of the author's. Follow with a single return.
** Presenting authors are expected to pay their own travel expenses and conference registration fee(s).
Tables and Graphs: Supporting graphs, tables and other graphics and specific data that will illustrate and/or clarify the research and its impacts are encouraged. These graphs, tables and graphics should be embedded in the submitted Word document and must be of sufficient resolution to be reproduced clearly, typically at 300 dpi.
References: May be included at the end. Please use a standard format, such as that shown below:

Acknowledgments: Support from outside sources, such as Research Grants, should be listed here. Based on the standards set by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and guidelines of the Food and Drug Administration as endorsed by the American Medical Association, any conflict of interest must be clearly recognizable. The indication of outside support does not affect the decision of abstract acceptance or rejection.
Disclosures: Include any disclosure information here. In order for your colleagues to properly evaluate the information, analysis and opinions presented in your abstract, it is important that they be informed of potential conflicts of interest pertinent to the research submitted. Therefore, conference management requires that all authors provide any relevant information concerning personal or professional circumstances and relationships that might reasonably be expected to affect the author's view on the subject. Examples include, but are not limited to:
- Stock options or bond holdings in a for-profit corporation or self-directed pension plan
- Employment (full or part-time)
- Ownership or partnership
- Consulting fees or other remuneration (payment)
- Non-remunerative positions of influence such as officer, board member, trustee or public spokesperson
- Receipt of royalties
- Speakers bureau
Appropriate disclosure will be stated in the scientific program and the abstract volume. If you do not have anything to disclose, you must indicate this on the online abstract submission form. The disclosure information you provide will not influence the review of your abstract. Abstracts will not be reviewed without proper completion of the disclosure section on the abstract submission form. Disclosure information for all authors is required upon abstract submission.
Submission Deadline
Deadline for abstracts is July 31, 2008.
You will receive an email confirmation upon completion of submitting an abstract.
