Student involvement has been a critical component of every conference, and remains part of the TERMIS' mission. We will continue our commitment to provide many learning opportunities during the conference, as well as the opportunity to interact and network with today's leading regenerative medicine experts.

Student and Young Investigator Section (SYIS)

Student involvement is a critical component of TERMIS. SYIS provides a platform for the "next generation" of scientists and engineers in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine to interact. SYIS aims to further the professional and scientific development of its members. The TERMIS definition for a Student member is any individual, who is engaged as a full-time graduate or undergraduate, in a university or college program and is actively involved in research in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Young Investigators are defined as persons who are employed by an academic institution in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, who have been awarded their doctoral degree within the past 3 years and who are not holding an appointment as a faculty or academic staff in a university/research institute.


Congratulations to SYIS attendees of the 4th TERMIS World Congress 2015 who were awarded for their podium presentations!

1st place: Jaqueline Bliley (University of Pittsburgh, USA) "Regeneration of long gap median nerve defects and functional reinnervation of the abductor pollicis brevis muscle using novel tissue engineered nerve guides in a non-human primate model"

2nd place: Michelle Xuanyi Ma (University of California, San Diego, USA) "A 3D printed human iPSC-derived hepatic model that can improve in vitro liver functional maturation"

3rd place: William Chen (University of Pittsburgh, USA) "Controlled delivery of angiogenic factor FGF2 and immunomodulatory cytokine IL-10 cocktail by heparin-based coacervate synergistically enhances ischemic heart repair"

4th place: Robert Wieduwild (Technische Universtitaet Dresden, Germany) "3D bioprinting of physical hydrogels based on peptide oligosaccharide interaction"

5th place: Annika Weigand (Friedrich-Alexander Unversity of Erlagen-Nuernberg, Germany) "Vascularized bone tissue engineering under xenogeneic-free conditions in a large animal model as a basis for early clinical applicability"

Prof. Dame Julia Polak Best Poster Award - Asha Patel (Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, MA)- Synthetic Substrates For Serum Free Culture Of Human Stem Cell Derived Cardiomyocytes With Improved Maturity And Toxicological Sensitivity Identified Using Combinatorial Materials Microarrays.

MRes in Tissue Engineering for Regenerative Medicine (TERM) Course -
University of Manchester, UK

The MRes in Tissue Engineering for Regenerative Medicine (TERM) is a collaborative one year full-time postgraduate degree programme that brings together expertise from across the University. The Masters of Research in Tissue Engineering for Regenerative Medicine (MRes TERM) aims to provide high quality training in novel strategies and technologies aimed to repair, replace and ultimately regenerate tissues and organs. To achieve this, novel approaches are championed in order to exploit advances in synthetic biology and engineer advances in biological functionality. Such ambition requires a commitment to interdisciplinary training and convergence of expertise spanning the biological, computational, mathematical, biomaterial and physical sciences. The MRes is well equipped to provide this, with academic collaboration from across the University including the UK Centre for Tissue Regeneration; North West Embryonic Stem Cell Centre, the Healing Foundation Centre and the UK Centre for Tissue Engineering (UKCTE). Since its inception in 2007, the MRes has successfully woven cohorts of students from disparate scientific and engineering backgrounds to apply their expertise to biological problems and generate novel clinical solutions. Through a combination of interactive seminar programmes, multi-disciplinary laboratory-based project placements and extensive industrial collaboration, the course provides critical training capacity in a discipline that shows enormous future potential. The University of Manchester has a vast research network in this field, comprising international experts from multiple disciplines and so is extremely well-placed to deliver a truly unique MRes course of exceptional quality.

Cell-based technologies: cell & gene therapies and tissue engineering

ONLINE FORMAT, university-specific degrees of the University of Granada, requiring 2/4 week period of practical training (depending on the chosen degree) in a fully equipped GMP facility, built for training purposes, in Granada, Spain.

This innovative international Master's Programme has a European focus and consists of 3 different Master Degrees and 1 Expert Degree organized in theoretical modules and practical modules:

  • Master Degree in Manufacturing of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products, Specialization as Qualified Person (1,630 hrs)
  • Master Degree in Manufacturing of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products, Specialization as Manufacturing Manager (1,500 hrs)
  • Master Degree in Manufacturing of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products, Specialization as Quality Control Manager (1,500 hrs)
  • Expert Degree in Quality Assurance for Manufacturing of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (1,060 hrs)
