Council Members

Catarina M. Alves - Chair TERMIS-SYIS EU
Catarina graduated (BSc) in Applied Biology at the University of Minho (Portugal) in 2000. Currently, she is a PhD student in Dr. Rui L. Reis Lab, the 3B's Research Group - Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetics. Her PhD research work is related to the role of protein interactions with natural origin biomaterials on determining the correspondent host responses. In 2005 she became involved in the S & YI Section of TERMIS, participating since then in the organization of different activities.

Eric Farrell - Vice-Chair TERMIS-SYIS EU
Eric works as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Orthopaedics department at Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam. His research interests there include tracking and labelling of cells with superparamagnetic iron oxide for in vivo tracking with MRI, induction of in vitro angiogenesis and cartilage repair. After doing a degree in Physiology, he completed his Phd on osteogenic and chondrogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells in 2005 graduating from Trinity College Dublin in 2006. Eric was also one of the local organisers for the 2006 TERMIS EU meeting in Rotterdam.

Miguel Oliveira - Treasurer TERMIS-SYIS EU
Miguel is a biochemist and received is degree (BSc) in Biochemistry from the Faculty of Sciences - University of Porto (Portugal) in 2001. He is currently a PhD student at the 3B's Research Group - University of Minho (Portugal). Due to this multidisciplinary background he developed interests in materials science, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, and nanotechnology with an emphasis on the development of targeted DDS. The PhD work consists on the development of novel strategies/therapies for bone, cartilage and osteochondral tissue engineering applications.

Yvonne Bastiaansen-Jenniskens - Secretary for TERMIS-SYIS EU
Yvonne is a PhD student at the department of Orthopaedics at the Erasmus MC University Medical Centre Rotterdam the Netherlands. Her work focuses on targeting collagen production in cartilage tissue engineering by using several approaches such as growth factors and (lenti)viral transduction. She graduated in 2004 from the University of Nijmegen with a masters of science degree in Biomedical Science. Before she became secretary of the TERMIS-SYIS EU, she helped organise TERMIS-SYIS activities during the TERMIS-EU chapter meeting in Rotterdam in 2006.

Matteo Moretti - Scientific and Professional Development Committee Chair TERMIS-SYIS EU
Matteo works as a research fellow at the IRCCS Galeazzi Orthopaedics Institute in Milan. His main research activities are focused on bioreactors, from design to fully working prototypes and tissue engineering of osteochondral and cardiovascular tissues. Both of his degrees, B.Eng (Politecnico di Milano) and M.Sc (Trinity College Dublin) are in Bioengineering. He carried out part of his PhD in Prof. I. Martin's Lab, U. Basel and obtained a European Ph.D from Politecnico di Milano. He then worked as postdoctoral fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard-MIT Div. of Health Science and Technology, in Prof. R. Langer's Lab. He became involved in TERMIS SYIS in 2005.
